Within an hour from Andernos you will reach Bordeaux. In 2007 the city was classified as a Unesco World Heritage site for its architecture. Take a stroll on the old town’s paved streets with cafés. Start from Quinconces and take a look at the Grand Theatre on your way to Place de la Bourse to take pictures. Walk along the Garonne back to the CAPC Contemporary Museum of Arts and to the Cité du Vin.
Even if Bordeaux is known for its rich heritage it is also an alternative city.
The right river bank used to be industrial and is now reborn. The Darwin Ecosystem is rooted there. It gathers people around some social, economical and ecological interests.. There is a skatepark, an alternative high school, some start-up offices and some eco-friendly shops, a restaurant, an organic grocery shop, some street art.. Darwin Ecosystem also hosts some concerts and conferences.
At Cité du vin you will learn about the worldwide wine business and history. Walking on the Garonne banks you will be dazzled by the Place de la Bourse’s reflection in the Miroir d’eau. The old town’s paved streets and medieval vibe will conquer your heart, especially St Michel basilica and La Grosse Cloche (“the big bell”, st James street).
Walking on the Garonne banks in the opposite direction, make your way to Jardin Public to read a book and take a look at the botanical garden. You can also visit the Natural History Museum or the Modern Art Museum nearby (CAPC).
Bordeaux is also famous for its good wine and food : some restaurant ideas are Baud & Millet, or restaurants in rue St Rémi… Try canelés and oysters as well.
Make sure to dedicate at least a day to discover this wonderful city - its history, cultural heritage and gastronomy : you will not regret it !
