Which beaches to choose for your family?

There’s no shortage of family beaches on the Bassin d’Arcachon. Among them, the Plage du Bétey in Andernos-les-Bains ticks all the boxes. The water remains shallow for several meters, and bathing is supervised in season. A playground is just a few steps from the sand.

On the other side of the Bassin, Arcachon’s Plage Pereire is another family-friendly beach. Its shady lawn invites picnics, even in midsummer. Children can play on the fine sand while grown-ups stroll under the pine trees.

Tip from the Fontaine Vieille Campsite team: from our campsite on the Bay of Arcachon, the Mauret beach can be reached in 5 minutes on foot. It’s a favorite spot for families staying with us. It’s best to go in the late morning, when the tide is rising and the water is warming up in the sun. Children love to splash around, and parents enjoy the peace and quiet with a view over the Bassin.

The Bassin’s beaches for sports enthusiasts

The Bay of Arcachon is also a playground for sports enthusiasts. The Abatilles beach in Arcachon attracts windsurfers thanks to its exposure to the wind. For paddleboarding, head for Pereire or Plage de l’Herbe at Cap Ferret. The water here remains flat and crystal-clear.

Looking for waves? Ocean beaches such as La Salie and Petit Nice offer great surfing sessions. Longe-côte is also developing along the Bassin, with clubs in Andernos-les-Bains and Arcachon.

Where to stay as a couple on the Bay of Arcachon?

For a break for two, the Bay of Arcachon is full of surprises. The Moulleau beach, south of Arcachon, offers a panoramic view of the Dune du Pilat. At the end of the day, the golden light transforms the landscape. It’s one of the most beautiful sunsets on the Gironde coast.

In Cap Ferret, the Conche du Mimbeau charms with its calm and picture-postcard setting. This spit of sand, protected from currents, invites contemplation. More discreet, the Plage des Américains at Pyla-sur-Mer remains a well-kept secret. Bordered by dunes and vegetation, it’s one of the most intimate beaches in the Bassin d’Arcachon.

Unspoilt beaches for nature lovers

The wild beaches of the Bassin d’Arcachon are a delight for those who prefer calm to bustle. The Quinconces beach in Andernos-les-Bains is a little-known tourist attraction. Bordered by tamarisk and pine trees, it gives you the feeling of being alone on the Bassin. On the Cap Ferret side, the village of Le Canon hides a pocket beach of raw charm.

Further south, the area around the Le Teich bird sanctuary combines nature walks and swimming. Of all the beaches on the Bassin d’Arcachon, these are the most exotic.
