A natural escape between pines and sand

This zoological park covers 22 hectares of maritime pine forest. Easily accessible via the Cazaux road (D112), it lies just 12 km from the Dune du Pilat, between ocean, lakes and beaches.

Access from the north of the basin is just as pleasant, passing through oyster-farming villages and typical wetlands. Between sand and forest, this Gironde tourism site invites you to enjoy a nature getaway that appeals to families and visitors from all over France.

Popular with holidaymakers camping in the Arcachon basin, the park can be reached in 42 minutes from our campsite. Its sandy paths and peaceful surroundings are home to over 1,000 animals of more than 200 species from all over the world, in areas designed with their well-being in mind.

A story of passion, storms and resilience

The Arcachon Basin Zoo was created in 1987, driven by the passion of Bernard Couturier. His crazy dream? To share his daily life with wild animals. Driven by this vision, he built the park’s infrastructure himself, in the manner of a facteur Cheval. In 1989, the zoo opened its doors to the public.

In 1999, a violent storm ravaged almost 80% of the forest site. Thanks to the unfailing determination of the park’s founder, reconstruction was swift and exemplary. The park’s history continues with highlights such as the birth of the first chimpanzee in 2010, followed by that of a black rhinoceros in December 2019. In 2022, a large-scale fire forced the emergency evacuation of the animals, who were saved thanks to the solidarity of other zoos. Finally, the arrival of the gorillas in 2023 marks a major milestone in this family epic, which continues to write the territory’s wild history.

What to see when you visit the park

Plan to spend the whole day here – there’s so much to see! This zoo is home to dozens of species in themed areas designed with animal welfare and visitor enjoyment in mind.

The African plain

This is THE highlight of the visit. African elephants, black rhinoceroses, giraffes, zebras, ostriches… The animals evolve in vast spaces reminiscent of the savannah. You’d think you were somewhere else.

Chimpanzee island & orangutans

Primates are always a hit! The chimpanzee island, built in 2008, remains a must-see. Since 2014, Bornean orangutans have joined the park in an enclosure to be renovated in 2020.

Lions & felines

The Lions’ Bridge – built in just 3 months by a handful of men in 2003 – allows visitors to get up close and personal with the lions. The white lions, which arrived in 2007, are always a guaranteed “wow” factor for children.

La Ferme de France

A softer space, ideal for toddlers. Farm animals are grouped together in a rural setting. Perfect for families who want to combine wildlife discovery with more accessible content for the little ones.

African and South American aviaries

Bird lovers are in for a treat! The African aviary (2017) and the South American aviary (2021) bring together russet and colorful species from far and wide. Macaws, parrots, toucans… There’s plenty to marvel at!

The lemur contact enclosure

Since 2013, visitors have been able to enter the lemur enclosure. A direct, gentle and safe approach. Children love it, and so do adults!

Activities for an even richer day

The Arcachon Basin Zoo does more than just show animals. It offers educational and immersive activities that make all the difference.

Safari Tour

Aboard a dedicated vehicle, discover the areas least accessible on foot. The Safari Tour starts every 30 minutes, from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. A not-to-be-missed option for an even more complete visit!

4 per person in addition to admission.

Caretaker for a day

Do you dream of feeding an elephant or preparing rations for the wildcats? The “Soigneur d’un jour” experience takes you behind the scenes of the park. An extraordinary activity, available on Book.

Soigneur d’un soir & Rencontre Privilège

For those who want to go even further, the Bassin d’Arcachon zoo offers nocturnal experiences or special animal encounters with specific species. The perfect way to leave your mark!
